But\, in reality\, sharks are complex\, undertaking extensive migrations\, exhibiting intricate behaviors\, and maintaining marine systems\, especially here in Oregon. With 15 species commonly found off Oregon and nearly 500 globally\, sharks help to maintain the stability of the systems humans depend upon for food\, recreation\, and production. In Oregon\, this stability helps support vibrant fisheries and\, consequently\, the communities and economies dependent upon them. In the Big Fish Lab\, we work to understand shark behavior\, movements\, and physiology in Oregon and around the world. We will recap findings and lessons from decades of shark research and discuss the future of sharks and our oceans.
