SUMMARY:The Oregon Cultural Trust - Niki Price\, Presenter
DESCRIPTION:Niki Price\nWhere else but Oregon would you find a statewide program to protect cultural vitality?\nCreated in 2001 by the Oregon Legislature\, the Oregon Cultural Trust is a testimony to how much Oregonians value culture. No other state provides a 100 percent tax credit to inspire cultural giving. \nAs uniquely Oregonian as public beaches and the bottle bill\, the Oregon Cultural Trust was established by the Oregon Legislature as an ongoing funding engine for arts and culture across the state. \nOregonians fund the Cultural Trust. We\, in turn\, fund the artists\, potters\, rappers\, acrobats and dreamers who make Oregon\, Oregon. \nIn 2023 Oregonians gave $5.4 million to the Cultural Trust! Sixty percent of that went straight back to the field. The remaining 40 percent helped grow our permanent fund. \nOur three grant programs fund our five Statewide Partners\, 45 County and Tribal Coalitions and qualified cultural nonprofits through competitive Cultural Development Grants.

SUMMARY:Encore for Steve Hartman’s Kindness 101 series
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Ric Neese\nSteve Hartman : Kindness 101 series began as a virtual class on March 23\, 2020 as a web series designed for students during the COVID-19 pandemic school closures. \nInitially a 14-episode series on YouTube\, Kindness 101 spanned four years featuring stories from Hartman’s CBS “On the Road” segments. \nIn 2024\, Drake University (Des Moines\, Iowa) partnered to expand the series into an educational curriculum (K-12) used in tens of thousands of schools. \nAs of early 2026\, the series continues to air new segments\, with recent episodes exploring themes like mindfulness and the ripple effect of doing good. \nToday’s presentation will revisit the origins of Hartman’s “On the Road” adventures and highlight several stories from Kindness 101 with Steve Harman: Service and Kindness 101 Explores Mindfulness.

SUMMARY:Second Home: Addressing the Needs of Homeless High School Students in Lincoln County
DESCRIPTION:David Fleming\nSecond Home is a community response to the difficult problem of addressing the needs of homeless\, unaccompanied\, high school students in Lincoln County. By providing safe and stable housing and ongoing support\, students can focus on completing their secondary education and discover and realize their gifts and potential. Second Home finds volunteers in the community who have the capacity to host a young person in their home while the student works toward their educational goals. The program works with the Lincoln County School District and various community partners to connect students to hosts who would be willing to offer them room and board and a positive presence in their lives. With the security of a safe and stable place to live\, these students can graduate with a high school diploma and a valid rental history and become eligible for free college tuition. Please feel free to join Jeffrey Fleming\, the Home Provider Coordinator of Second Home\, as he sheds light on the plight of homeless youth in Lincoln County as well as the solutions programs like Second Home can offer and how you can help!

SUMMARY:Swifty (Swallows in Flight to Yachats)
DESCRIPTION:James Welch\nSWIFTY—Swallows in Flight to Yachats—is a passionate volunteer group dedicated to giving our local birds a fighting chance. From their home base in Yachats\, volunteers build\, install\, and carefully monitor nest boxes for ducks\, owls\, songbirds\, and especially the swallow family. \nTheir impact is impressive: more than 250 nest boxes now support Tree and Violet-green Swallows\, and another 90 boxes provide crucial habitat for Purple Martins. \nIn this illustrated talk\, you’ll be invited into the hidden world of these remarkable species—their ecology\, their nesting behaviors\, and the powerful role that thoughtfully placed nest boxes play in their survival. You’ll also learn about the growing challenges these birds face\, from shifting climate patterns to habitat loss\, and how community action can make a real difference. \nThe presentation will conclude with highlights from this year’s monitoring results\, offering an inside look at what’s working\, what’s changing\, and how WIFTY’s efforts are helping our local bird populations take flight. \nBIO: Jim Welch bought a home on the Oregon coast in 2016 when he retired from the renewable energy industry in Colorado. As a lifelong environmentalist\, he has been active in conservation related projects in the area. Besides co-founding SWIFTY\, he established Yachats annual environmental festival\, Wild Things\, where kids and families learn to enjoy and protect our treasured coastline and its wildlife. He is currently serving as a board member for the Seven Capes Bird Alliance and is in the process of getting the City of Yachats certified as one of the first “Bird Cities” in the state.   \n  \n

SUMMARY:“Three Brains Walk Into a Café: One Hears\, One Sees\, One Feels…”
DESCRIPTION:David Jordan\nThree brains walk into a café—no\, it’s not the start of a neuroscience joke\, though it could be. One’s eavesdropping on espresso orders\, another’s scanning the latte art like it’s a Rorschach test\, and the third is busy feeling the existential weight of a biscotti. Together\, they sip\, squabble\, and try to make sense of the world—each convinced their way is the only way to taste reality. Welcome to the café of perception\, where the menu is sensory and the debates are delightfully neurotic.

SUMMARY:Raised where the wind remembers (The Dust Bowl)
DESCRIPTION:Jeannine Jordan\nMy mother was born and raised on a wheat farm in western Kansas\, coming of age during the infamous “Dirty Thirties”—a time now remembered as the Dust Bowl era. I\, too\, am a native of western Kansas\, having grown up in the late 1950s amid flourishing wheat and sugar beet fields that had begun to recover from those devastating years. \nThis presentation will explore the many facets of the Dust Bowl and its impact on southwest Kansas and the Oklahoma Panhandle. We’ll examine the root causes of one of the most severe ecological disasters in American history\, share personal accounts from those who lived through it\, and reflect on the hard-earned lessons that ultimately helped restore the region’s agricultural vitality—enabling it to nourish the nation once again.

SUMMARY:Introducing Seven Capes Bird Alliance
DESCRIPTION:Ruth Shelly \nSeven Capes Development Coordinator \nFor 20 years\, Seven Capes Bird Alliance (formerly Audubon Society of Lincoln City) has been committed to the birds\, other wildlife\, and their habitats along the central Oregon coast. Learn about the education\, conservation\, and community science programs of this locally grown organization and its increasing impact. Find out how you can get involved—from participating in bird walks\, volunteering in classroom programs\, observing local Osprey nests\, or advancing our new Marine Conservation Areas at Cape Foulweather and Cape Lookout. Finally\, during this period of wintry weather\, learn about best practices in bird feeding for our local area and what species you might expect to see in your own backyard. \nRuth Shelly has spent a lifetime working in museums and retired as Executive Director of Portland Children’s Museum in 2020. She and her husband Kevin live on Devils Lake. They enjoy getting to know the local birding spots and fellow birders through Seven Capes field trips. Having worked in natural history museums and an aquarium\, Ruth is committed to lifelong learning in science and conservation. She is an avid bird photographer and\, when not working on Seven Capes projects\, volunteers for Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport and Brighter Horizons therapeutic riding center in Siletz.

SUMMARY:Port of Newport
DESCRIPTION:Aaron Bretz\n🌊 Port of Newport: Gateway to Oregon’s Coastal Vitality \nNestled along the rugged central Oregon coastline\, the Port of Newport anchors the City of Newport—Lincoln County’s seat and its beating economic heart. Spanning approximately 59 square miles\, this dynamic port community is home to around 10\,800 residents who live at the intersection of maritime tradition and modern enterprise. \nThe port’s reach is as expansive as its influence: stretching north to the basalt headlands of Otter Rock\, eastward six miles inland through forested hills and river valleys\, south to the tide-swept shores of Seal Rock\, and west into the vast embrace of the Pacific Ocean. It’s a region where salt air meets sawdust\, and fishing boats share the horizon with migrating whales. \n🛥️ Industries That Shape the Coastline \nThe Port of Newport thrives on a rich blend of industries that reflect both its natural bounty and entrepreneurial spirit: \n\nCommercial & Sport Fishing: From deep-sea charters to hardworking trawlers\, the port pulses with the rhythm of the ocean. It’s a haven for anglers and a lifeline for seafood harvesters.\nFish Processing: Locally caught Dungeness crab\, albacore tuna\, and Pacific shrimp are transformed into premium products that travel far beyond the dock.\nShipping & Marine Services: The port supports regional commerce with cargo handling\, vessel repair\, and marine logistics that connect coastal Oregon to global markets.\nTourism & Recreation: Visitors flock to Newport for its iconic Yaquina Bay Lighthouse\, Oregon Coast Aquarium\, and windswept beaches—fueling a vibrant hospitality sector.\nLumber & Wood Processing: Inland forests feed a legacy of timber craftsmanship\, with mills and processors contributing to both local employment and export.\n\nWhether you’re watching sea lions bask on the docks or sipping coffee as fishing boats glide past the harbor\, the Port of Newport is more than a geographic location—it’s a living\, working landscape where ocean\, industry\, and community converge. \n
